I liked summer because it turned the simplest journey into an odyssey. The walk was grueling. The sun beat down on the back of my neck, and sweat slicked my spine. My sneakers crunched on dry gravel; the cicadas screamed so loudly they vibrated in my teeth. It was uncomfortable. It was exhausting. And yet, I felt completely, vividly alive.
