Prison Architect Padded Cells: The Complete Guide to Managing the Criminally Insane
In the brutal, simulation-driven world of Prison Architect, managing the flow of standard inmates is challenging enough. You have to deal with gang wars, tunnels, contraband, and the constant threat of riots. But just when you think you’ve built the perfect maximum-security fortress, the game introduces a wrench into the works: The Criminally Insane.

Prison Architect: The Complete Guide to Padded Cells
1. Overview & Purpose
A Padded Cell is a special, high-security room in Prison Architect designed exclusively for prisoners diagnosed with the Insane trait (introduced in the Psych Ward: Warden’s Edition DLC / Cleared for Transfer update). Unlike standard cells or even solitary cells, padded cells are the only room type that can reduce a prisoner’s Polaroid (Sanity) meter and treat severe mental breakdowns.
- Appearance: The cell is lined with soft, white padding to prevent self-harm.
- Equipment: It requires an Anti-Suicide Locker (replaces the standard bed) and a Padded Door (replaces the standard jail door).
- Behavior: Insane prisoners in padded cells will eventually be visited by a Psychiatrist. Over time, they undergo "Treatment" which lowers their "Danger" and "Insanity" stats until they are cured and reclassified as a normal prisoner (who can then be moved to general population).
