Abstract This paper examines the "Transform Button HUD" mod for Sonic 3 AIR, a community-developed modification that introduces a heads-up display element mapping a transformation mechanic to a dedicated button. We analyze the mod’s design goals, implementation strategies, gameplay impacts, user interface (UI) and accessibility considerations, technical integration with Sonic 3 AIR's engine, and its broader implications for retro game modding communities. Recommendations for mod authors and future research directions are provided.
